:::Graphicswallah: Graphics in India:::

Keith Lovegrove

Laurence King Publishing 2003

"From Mumbai to Chennai and from Kochi to Karachi, from the humble signwriter to the blue-chip advertising agency, the creative industries of India entice and inform a population of over one billion. In this crowded, colourful world, innovation is often born of necessity and scant resources, and can result in the very clever or the completely ridiculous. The most exciting graphic work has been singled out by the keen eye of Keith Lovegrove on his journey through India. He lovingly documents a wide range of vernacular graphics and commercial art from the personalized bodywork of vehicles through to advertising hoardings; from political posters to lavish Bollywood publicity. The result is a celebration of the huge variety of graphic work that Lovegrove found in this densely populated landscape and a reflection of the religious, political and cultural diversity recorded in specially commisioned photography. :::Mediterranean Color:::

by Jeffrey Becom

Abbeville Press 2003

"Jeffrey Becom shows them to us as we have never looked at them before; not the hackneyed tourist attractions on perpetual display, not the well-worn monuments, not even the sweeping sea vistas of the postcards, but the houses of farmers and fishermen, the walls of back streets, the poignant, gentle, startling details of a dazzlingly varied vernacular architecture."

Jouve + Moulène + Paradeis

"This is a show by three photographers who, using vastly different techniques, are united by a preoccupation with gestures and signs in the urban environment. Jean-Luc Moulène's fine black and white photographs throw into relief advertising hoardings with their super-sized human representations. Valérie Jouve's impressive series 'Les Sorties de Bureaux' isolates a stream of office workers as individuals against a silver background where, plucked from the anonymous crowd, their stresses, anxiety and vulnerability are exposed. Florence Paradeis pushes the boundaries of photographic technique, mounting surreal images with hyper-real digital reproduction on shiny PVC."

Francesc Català Roca

"Madrid's Reina Sofia museum presents an exhibition of photographs taken by Catalan Francesc Català Roca in Barcelona and Madrid in the 1950s.

The collection brings together for the first time a selection of 100 photographs by Roca, which offer a characteristic and nostalgic view of the two cities during the 1950s. The images include emblematic buildings, the inhabitants, transport, streets and squares. The design of the posters and the shop signs, the clothes and the hairstyles of the women, the men's hats and the cars all reflect the tastes of another era, an important part of Spain's history."

Tokyo: The Imperial Capital

The Wolfsonian in Miami presents Tokyo: The Imperial Capital, an exhibition that features prints by Koizumi Kishio (1893-1945).

"The exhibition comprises prints from Koizumi's One Hundred Pictures of Great Tokyo in the Showa Era, from 1928-1940, which depict the city as it was transformed into the imperial capital following the 1923 earthquake. They display the hybridity of a city embracing modernity but maintaining traditions, with impressive views of both modern constructions such as Haneda airport and revered ancient temples."
